Ensuring Safety and Enjoyment for All

Welcome to Major Taylor Chicago Cycling Club’s Ride Rules page! As a club that cherishes the joy of cycling and the legacy of Major Taylor, we prioritize safety, respect, and camaraderie on all our rides. Whether you’re joining us for the first time or are a seasoned member, these guidelines are designed to ensure every ride is a safe, enjoyable, and inclusive experience. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with our rules and prepare for an unforgettable journey on two wheels.

Safety First:

  • Helmets: Mandatory on all rides. Must be ANSI or Snell-approved.
  • Bicycle: Ensure it’s in good mechanical condition. Know basic maintenance, including how to change a flat.
  • Clothing: Suitable for weather conditions. Cycling shorts, tights, long sleeve jerseys, and gloves recommended.
  • Fluids: Hydrate before and during the ride. Bring water or a sports drink.
  • Food: Carry energy foods or dried fruit on longer rides. Note: many rides don’t include meal stops.

Equipment and Preparedness:

  • Tools: Carry at least two tire levers, a spare tube, a patch kit, and a pump or CO2 cartridges.
  • Lights: Required for rides during dark hours.
  • Arrive Early: Ride start times are strict departure times.

Ride Etiquette and Behavior:

  • Group Riding Etiquette: Maintain a steady line, signal turns and stops, communicate hazards.
  • Traffic Laws: Obey all traffic signs and signals. Ride in the direction of traffic.
  • No Littering: Be environmentally responsible. Carry out all trash.
  • Ride Predictably: Avoid sudden stops and movements. Maintain a consistent pace.
  • Personal Space: Keep a safe distance from other cyclists, especially important during pandemics.

Restrictions:

  • Aero Bars: Not allowed on MTC3 rides.
  • Earbuds/Headphones: Prohibited for safety reasons.

For First-Time Riders:

  • Choose Wisely: Start with an easier, shorter ride.
  • Meet the Leaders: Introduce yourself to the ride leader at the start.
  • Pre-Ride Meal: Eat well at least 30 minutes before the ride.
  • Ride Leaders: There to answer questions and guide you in group riding.

Additional Considerations:

  • Emergency Contact: Carry emergency contact and medical information.
  • Respect Leaders: Follow the instructions and decisions of ride leaders.
  • COVID-19 Precautions: Follow current health guidelines on mask-wearing, social distancing, and hygiene (if applicable).
